When Boredom Strikes

The unique friendship of a bear and a dog

A female grey wolf and a male brown bear's remarkable "friendship" was captured by Finnish photographer Lassi Rautiainen over the course of ten days in 2013. Together, they traveled everywhere while hunting and splitting their catch.

As a camera records both creatures sharing a meal on several evenings, a surprising alliance between a bear and wolf emerges.

For ten days in a row, a male brown bear and a female gray wolf were seen socializing, playing, and occasionally sharing meals.

Finnish photographer Lassi Rautiainen, now 62, told Daily Mail in 2013 that it was “very unusual to see a bear and a wolf getting along like this.” According to what I could gather, this friendship was genuinely formed for the first time, at least in Europe.

Nobody can truly understand why or how young wolf and bear came to be buddies, Lassi said. It is wonderful to discuss uncommon occurrences in the outdoors that you would never expect to witness, according to the author. “I think that perhaps they were both alone, young, and a little unsure of how to survive alone.”

Nature is full of surprises Even scientists are baffled by the relationship between the bear and the wolf, but the pair seemed content enough in each other’s company.
