The Ostrich Has Eyes Bigger Than Its Brain

Ostriches have the largest eyes of any land animal—great for spotting danger on the savanna.

The ostrich isn’t just the world’s largest bird—it also has the largest eyes of any land animal, each measuring nearly 2 inches (5 cm) across. In fact, an ostrich’s eye is even bigger than its brain! These enormous eyes give the ostrich exceptional vision, which is vital for survival in the wide, open landscapes of the African savanna. With such keen eyesight, ostriches can detect predators like lions or hyenas from great distances, allowing them to flee at high speeds—up to 70 km/h (43 mph). It’s a perfect evolutionary trade-off: while the ostrich may not be the smartest bird, its incredible vision more than makes up for it in the fight for survival.
