Avocados Are Delicious for Us—But Dangerous for Pets

Avocados contain persin, which is toxic to many animals.

While avocados are a beloved superfood for humans, they pose a serious danger to many animals. The fruit contains a natural fungicidal toxin called persin, which is mostly harmless to people but can be toxic—even fatal—to several other species. Birds, rabbits, horses, and many domestic pets like dogs and cats are especially vulnerable. Persin is found in the avocado’s leaves, skin, and pit, and in some cases even the flesh can cause health issues. Symptoms of persin poisoning in animals can include vomiting, difficulty breathing, swelling, and heart complications. So while you’re enjoying your avocado toast, remember to keep this creamy treat far out of reach from your furry or feathered companions—it’s a silent threat hidden inside a popular health food.
