The Snow Gum Tree: Nature’s Living Watercolor

Snow gum trees reveal colorful bark streaks as outer layers peel and oxidize at different stages.

Native to the highlands of Tasmania and Queensland, the snow gum tree (Eucalyptus pauciflora) is one of nature’s most stunning displays of living color. Its bark peels away in irregular patches, revealing smooth new layers beneath that oxidize at varying rates, creating vibrant streaks of green, grey, orange, and even purple. This natural aging process gives each tree a unique, ever-changing watercolor appearance that looks almost painted by hand. More than just beautiful, the snow gum is also incredibly resilient—able to survive harsh alpine conditions and even regenerate after bushfires. It’s a perfect blend of artistry and adaptation, proving once again that nature is the finest designer of all.
